Synthes, Inc. Announces Strong First Quarter 2007 Sales Results: Q1 2007 Sales up 14.2% versus the prior year (11.9% in Local Currency)

Solothurn/Switzerland, April 19, 2007

Synthes Q1 2007 consolidated sales were US$ 658.0 million.

Continued growth in all product lines driven by: successful product introductions, global expansion of a dedicated sales force and focus on surgeon education

The U.S. Trauma business continued to outpace the market with strong growth in all product segments resulting in market share gain and reinforcing Synthes' leadership position in all Trauma product lines. The continued revenue growth of locking compression plates (LCP) and the Expert Nailing System were major growth contributors.

The global growth of the Spine business was due to a broad range of products including the Interbody Fusion and Biomaterials. Recent launches of SynFix-LR (anterior - lumbar stand alone device for degenerative disc disease), Pangea Deformity (comprehensive next generation pedicle screw system) and Vectra-T (unique anterior translational cervical plate) were significant growth contributors. The company continues to focus on surgeon education in the controlled rollout of Prodisc-L in the U.S.

The growth of the CMF business was particularly strong in Europe and Asia-Pacific, the result of continued investment in a dedicated CMF global sales organization. Sales growth was driven by all core product segments, including neuro, craniofacial and mandible systems. Sternal fixation sales continue to grow globally. The market has responded favourably to the newly launched MatrixNEURO Fixation System.

The company continues to increase its global efforts and investment in surgeon education and operating room personnel.

First quarter 2007 regional sales performance

Synthes first quarter 2007 double digit sales growth was led by North America and the Rest of the World. Europe experienced strong growth in many key markets with the exception of Germany, Austria and Switzerland due to the unusually warm winter months and an exceptionally strong sales basis posted in Q1 2006. The mild winter in Europe primarily affected the Trauma business. During the first quarter 2007 Asia Pacific continued to grow at a double digit rate excluding the Japanese government price decreases. Australia continued to generate strong growth during Q1 2007.
