Stratec Medical successfully issues company shares publicly (IPO). The shares are traded on the Swiss Exchange SWX. Mathys and Synthes USA remain privately owned companies.

Synthes USA, Stratec Medical and Mathys expand their business activities to include cranio-maxillofacial and spinal products as well as power tools in their product portfolio.

In the USA, a second company – "Synthes Spine" – is founded to cater for the fast growing spinal market.

1990

Straumann sells the osteosynthesis business segment, including joint replacement, to members of its management (management buyout). A new company called "Stratec Medical" emerges; Straumann continues with dental implantology products.
